RECENTLY I wrote to a Sinhala editor of an English language newspaper in Colombo asking the following questions:
It makes me wonder whether it is hubris or mockery on the part of the SLMM [Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission] to recently declare that the CFA [Ceasefire Agreement] ... more »

Some people thought I was a hero. Some people said that what I did was wrong. But everything I did was according to my conscience. I made a stand all people, not just black people, should have thought about making, because it wasn't just black people being drafted. The government had a system where the rich man's son went to ... more »

VAHARAI TAMILS FREE

Vharai Tamils Free
I shall keep my ears plugged to the ground
To hear your returning foot steps
We were your shield and fortress
And now you have left us...
WE are weak; just skin and bones
Yet the spark of humanity is left within us
We shall survive.
Under the starlit sky we sleep
Dreaming of freedom.
The haunting howls of the night
Disturb my gentle sleep
I shall be awake
To see whether I could detect your foot prints in the sand on a full moon night.
I have kept half- a-tamarind to share with you
So that we can eat and talk of the meaning of humanity.
That which binds us
Far beyond the physical dimensions of our restrictions, fears and suspicions.

In everyday usage in the languages and cultures with which I am familiar, a "writer" is a person who produces literature--that is, a novelist, poet, dramatist. I think it is generally true that in all cultures writers have a separate, perhaps even more ... more »

Laurence W. Britt
The following article is from Free Inquiry magazine, Volume 23, Number 2.
Free Inquiry readers may pause to read the “Affirmations of Humanism: A Statement of Principles” on the inside cover of the magazine. To a secular humanist, these principles seem so logical, so right, so crucial. Yet, there is one archetypal political philosophy ... more »

Chomsky gives a personal answer...

SAVE THE HUMAN
by
chandi sinnathurai
on Mon 01 Jan 2007 04:39 AM LKT
SAVE THE HUMAN
From the melting caps of ice
On the artic circle a host of voices heard...
The singing 'nuns' of dolphins returns to feed their young
after a long dark winter.
The virgin buds begin to bloom
The cocoons yield the long-awaiting flight
This is how freedom comes and life begins...
This is how nature teaches man to explore meaning.
In every sunset there is dawn.
As long as there is time and space
The struggle for emancipation cannot cease.
Man will continue...
traversing a moment in life
And some times...in history
transcending a moment in life.
Call that moment freedom.
Liberation if you will.
