FREE VAHARAI TAMILS

[An Appeal to the International Community]

"...We are one human family. Each violation of a human right is a threat to the welfare and dignity of the entire human family. If  there was a violation of human rights in Sri Lanka, it was not an internal matter of interest to Sri Lanka alone. The right of a citizen or a human rights organisation to bring to the notice of the world that there was a serious violation of human rights was not prohibited by any provision in the Emergency Regulations..." S.Nadesan Q.C.

Over 40,000 Tamil civilians are trapped in the Vaharai region in the Batticaloa District in the east of Sri Lanka since early October 2006 without food, medicine and clean water. It is reported since November 29th the Sri Lankan Government [SLG] has not allowed any convoys of food or medicine into Vaharai.

The UN News Centre reported on the 30th Of November 2006 thus: “The UN in Sri Lanka reiterates its concern for all displaced persons in the Vaharai area and in particular for the health and nutritional status of children and pregnant women,” Ms. Clinton said. “We urge the parties to ensure freedom of movement, and to facilitate unimpeded and secure access for international humanitarian actors to this vulnerable population.” [http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=20789&Cr=sri&Cr1=lanka']

While the starving Tamils in Vaharai are looking for some one to rescue them, the SLG Armed Forces are bombarding these internally displaced people by aerial bombing. As a result scores of Tamils including children are being maimed and killed.

We therefore urgently appeal to the international community to intervene in the name of common humanity and rescue the Vaharai Tamils from their inhumane trauma, starvation and avoidable death. End.
