Why I’m An Estranged Leftist

A government must submit to questions by its citizens. That is democracy’s basic premise
APARNA SEN

ILLUSTRATION: NEELAKASH KSHETRIMAYUM

NEITHER I, nor my family, have ever been card-carrying members of the party but, in a sense, I grew up living and breathing the Left. As part of Utpal Dutt’s group, we put up plays ...   more »

                            STOP KILLING CIVILIANS!

The killing of civilians in Sri Lanka on a systematic fashion is something that is deeply worrying.  Both sides blame each other.  The Government publishes, often inflated figures of the civilian killings done by the Tamil Tigers.  The Tigers also publish details of civilian killings ...   more »

In 1805, the French army out maneuvered, outsmarted, and outfought the combined armies of Russia and Austria at Austerlitz. Three years later it would flounder against a rag-tag collection of Spanish guerrillas.

In 1967, it took six days for the Israeli army to smash Egypt, Jordan, and Syria and ...   more »

Pakistan’s Wounded Dictator

Sameer Dossani

After more than two weeks of supreme military command, Pakistan's General Pervez Musharraf has had enough. Enough of international pressure to lift martial law, that is.

Claiming to "have introduced the essence of democracy in Pakistan, whether anyone believes it or not," Musharraf has been more and more candid about his impatience with the West's ...   more »

In February 2007 at the Basilica of Santa Sabina in Rome, Pope Benedict XVI presided over the Ash Wednesday mass, which is, for Catholics, a solemn occasion marking the beginning of the 40-day season of Lent. During the liturgy, a distinguished few worshipers out of hundreds in attendance were invited to approach ...   more »

Another incident concerns Kavichandran Alexander. Kavi is from Batticaloa and is today one of the world’s most respected Recording Engineers cum Producers with his label Waterlily Acoustics having twice won the ‘World Music’ category in the Grammy Awards. Gauribala Swami and Haro Hara Amma ‘misappropriated’ Kavi’s earring in Kataragama Perehera season when Kavi was quite young and returned it after seven days having blessed it. Acoustic sound is Kavi’s specialty and he has recorded most of the great masters from around the world. Kavi attributes his keen sense of hearing to Murugan, God of Kataragama who transmitted this power through Swami and Haro Hara Amma. Kavi whom I have never met in the flesh found me magically on the net because I had in the past written about the very two people who had changed his life. We are now great friends.   more »

WHENEVER I am asked if I am optimistic about an end to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, I say that I am not.
